Doro: Fear no evil
29/01/09 || Euthanatos
I’ve been postponing reviewing this album like it meant my death. I don’t have anything against Doro particularly, I can sure appreciate her place in metal history and her overall hotness which has stood the test of time. For all those reasons, she is certainly a woman to admire. Still, Doro’s “solo” career has never meant much to me (actually, never meant anything at all), and this new album isn’t doing much to change that. After all, things start of with a cheesy intro that goes into one of the most repetitive songs I have ever heard, with a terribly annoying vocal line, which even Doro’s sexy pipes can’t prevent from making my dick go limp.
“Running From the Devil”, the next song, could have been interesting, a gritty traditional metal track with an aggressive riff, but the production on this album sure sucks balls. Unless everyone recorded their instruments inside a well with a bucket on their heads, there is no excuse. “Celebrate“next, sadly it’s not a Madonna cover; that would have been epic. Still, it’s a pretty decent metal hymn, I like these over-the-top metal homages, can’t go wrong with those.
I think this album would have been better if most songs had the aggressiveness of “Caught in a Battle” and “On The Run”. I like the faster-paced, more like Warlock aspect of Doro, and that’s what she should stick to. But the shitty, murky production is even more evident here. Atrocious. On the other hand, songs like “Herzblut” and “Walking with the Angel”, more power-ballad, slower moments, are fucking boring as fuck and make me want to stab my eyes.
As I listened to this album, it suddenly dawned upon me that with a crunchy, heavy production, like the ones provided by Andy Sneap or Roy Z, Doro could make something truly memorable. I mean, at this point in her career, wouldn’t that be the only thing missing and truly surprising? Something like Alice Cooper did with recent albums. Just a suggestion, although I know it’s never going to happen. Plus, her band is really good, but with a production this bad and with tedious songs, it doesn’t really show.
Nope, we’re stuck with a few good songs, a painful production and boobs. Oh, well, it could be worse.
The cover: Drawing of Doro Pesch in all of her leather-clad glory. I like this 80’s style cover, nostalgia for the win.
4 blond warlocks out of 10.
